This is a history of my Collier family history, but also many Colliers. There is information here about ‘mine’ and ‘others’, such as I’ve found throughout my time researching into the past.
The character to the right is Henry Hartnoll Collier (1835-1912) born and died in the area of Plymstock, now a suburb of the city of Plymouth, Devon, England. My great, great grandfather. A typical hardworking (and drinking) farm labourer, as so many were. It was with Henry that my journey into the past began properly.
His story is, in many ways, unremarkable but represents so many of us and our heritage. Wives, children, siblings, work, incidents and accidents (did I mention the drink?). Once I found evidence of him and his family in official registers, I started to be drawn into that story and the many stories and mysteries that came before.
So welcome, reader. I hope you find something of interest, use or merit here. Or at least, I hope it makes you consider what went before to make you “you”.
